More and more people are paying attention to the environment these days. I hear it all the time from people shopping our garden center, they ask; “What can we use on our lawn that would be safe for the environment, our children, our pet, but will still green-up our lawn?”
When we first started selling BioFlora® in our garden centers, believe it or not, people were hesitant to buy a “natural” or “organic” product. Seems silly doesn’t it? For decades we’ve been brainwashed as consumers into thinking that chemical fertilizers, although harmful to the environment, pets, and us, are okay in the name of a “greener lawn.”
In our part of the world, it is common for homes to be built on sites where the topsoil has been stripped by the developer and resold. Residents are left with yards of hardpan soil, or “clay” as they call it; hardly good enough to grow bushes and trees in, let alone “green grass.”
By the time we talk to customers, they have generally given up on their own methodology for growing healthy plants or green grass. The “good news,” I tell them, is that they don’t have to struggle any longer and that all their answers lie in “BioFlora” products.
Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium (NPK) are nutrients that are essential in the development of plant life. In the case of grass, synthetic or manmade fertilizers boast high concentrations of NPK for greener, healthier, more disease resistant lawns. Nitrogen is used for leaf growth and good green color. Plants use phosphorous to help form new roots and help fight disease. Potassium helps plants make strong stems and keep growing fast.
So, what is wrong with using synthetic, or manmade fertilizers, you ask? Synthetic fertilizers kill beneficial microorganisms in the soil that convert dead animal and plant remains into nutrient-rich organic matter. Synthetic fertilizers damage the natural makeup of soil in the long term. Also, Nitrogen is essential for plant growth, but it can be very dangerous when present at high levels in humans. Kids and pets should stay off the lawn after a chemical fertilizer has been applied until it’s been exposed to at least a quarter inch of rain or a good watering. Then, wait at least 24 hours before you allow kids and pets back on the lawn. Pets can ingest the nitrogen from licking their paws.
BioFlora Dry Crumbles® has been our fertilizer of choice because it offers microorganisms, which develop excellent organic matter for very rich topsoil; plus, it’s safe for kids and pets. It also has a lasting “greening” effect because of the larger granular prill size and the natural slow release of nutrients. Our customers love the BioFlora products and now ask for it by name. Worth mentioning, is the fact that as you create better soil conditions your lawn creates deeper root zones and therefore becomes more drought resistant.
Happy Gardening!
